Self-Care isn’t Selfish!

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock you will have noticed that one of the hot topics in 2019 seems to be Wellbeing.

Celebrities are campaigning to eradicate the stigma of mental health and schools are introducing mindfulness within their timetables. It seems that as a nation we are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of self-care.

So with this in mind, when was the last time you indulged in something entirely for yourself, without labelling that very act as selfish?

We are now beginning to realise that self-care is a priority and not a luxury. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

It isn’t always easy or obvious.

Self-care can actually be integrated into your life in the simplest of forms.

Allow yourself to take time out from the seemingly never-ending run of chores to read a few pages of that book that’s collecting dust on the bedside table. Take a brisk walk to appreciate the beauty of a cloudless sky amidst the torment of trying to achieve the perfect work/life balance (whatever that is). Soak away the stress of the day in a luxurious essential oil bath, with a few candles and a glass of your favourite tipple. Book that overdue massage that your body has been begging you to reward it with.

We should all aim to carve out a slice of our own personal sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of our life.

You might just discover an oasis on your own doorstep...

But how do we break the cycle when our daily routine takes over? The days roll into weeks that roll into months and before we know it, the countdown to the dreaded 'C word' is upon us (Christmas for those who were wondering) and in the blink of an eye, another year is behind us. Texts of "we really should meet up" and " would be so good to see you" linger in your inbox.

Well, what’s holding you back? Schedule the lunch date. Book yourselves all in for a spa break and drink the champagne! ‘Me time' doesn’t mean it has to be spent alone. The best therapy can sometimes be spending time with good friends, laughing the time away... after all, laughter really is amazing medicine.

Attitudes are changing for the better. Mindfulness is a big movement towards the wellbeing of the nation, and maybe even the world. We finally see ourselves and each other as more important than just slaves to the ‘9 to 5’.

In the wise words of Dolly Parton;

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”.
